Google Launches February 2026 Discover Core Update
Feb 12, 2026

Introduction
Google has announced its February 2026 Discover the core update. Google announced the updates via its official Search Central Blog. This update highlights Google's evolving effort to deliver the best possible content to searchers through its Discover feature, which has become a major avenue for content discovery on mobile.
What is Google Discover?
This is a new way of content consumption on the Google platform. You may not know about this, but Google Discover is a personalized content feed that emerges on the Google homepage and the Google app on your mobile devices. Compared to a standard search, where information must be explicitly searched for, Discover proactively presents data based on your interests and previous Google activity. This type of discovery is one of the powerful mediums with which publishers can drive traffic to their sites without traditional keyword searches.
What do core updates mean?
Big, broad changes to Google's algorithms are called Google core updates. They make systemic adjustments to algorithms rather than the pinpoint effects of other algorithm updates, such as Panda, Penguin, Mobilegeddon, etc. Google shortly described the algorithm change as an effort by Google to better evaluate content overall as it relates to the Discover feature.
The golden rule that led to success for Discover is the same as it is for the wider Google search ecosystem: Relevance is achieved by providing engaging and useful content that users will enjoy. Content that ranks effectively will be content that displays expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness (E-A-T). Publishers should work to make their content mobile-optimized, fast and easy to read.
Discover Optimization
Instead of working to optimize your existing content for Discover, you should aim to create engaging, visually attractive content with high-quality photographs. Visual content is essential for Google Discover, and images are often displayed in a way that improves the user experience. Content should be topical, timely and useful to users while maintaining a high level of professionalism and accuracy.
Avoid using clickbait and sensationalist, misleading headlines. Google will downrank content that uses sensationalist headlines that do not match the actual content or employs junk content to manipulate search rankings and users.
Moving Ahead
As with all previous core updates, it is important to continue with a focus on delivering top-notch content to your visitors, rather than intentionally manipulating the algorithm. If you have been negatively affected, review Google's Search Quality Rater Guidelines, which explain the thought process of Google's algorithmic decisions, and try to understand how you can work best to provide Google with helpful, trustworthy, people-first content. The February 2026 core updates and Discover core updates reaffirm Google's dedication to providing better content discovery experiences for both users and publishers who consistently produce useful, engaging information. Continue to monitor your Discover results in Google Search Console and adapt your content creation accordingly.
