Most B2B companies misread their market. Then blame the Sales Team.
Gartner confirms poor segmentation leads to low-quality leads, weak engagement, and low conversion. The silent killers of B2B growth.
The problem? Everyone knows their TAM. Nobody knows their SOM.
Quick breakdown. Let's draw from numbers.
TAM:
Total Addressable Market. The full global demand. $50 billion sounds great in the boardroom.
SAM:
Serviceable Addressable Market. What your capacity, logistics, and certifications actually allow. Maybe $2 billion as an example.
SOM:
Serviceable Obtainable Market. What you can win this year. With this team. These dealers. This is brand recall. Probably $80 million.
PAM :
Potential Addressable Market. Tomorrow's play. New geographies. New verticals. The next order book.
Most manufacturers stop here. Know the acronyms. Nod. Then chase everything.
The Real Play Book is? Priority sequencing.
Priority 1 - Domestic. Strong pockets.
McKinsey research shows companies with healthy home-market growth who expand internationally generate 2x the returns of those who don't. Own your 5 best districts before chasing Pan India.
Priority 2 - Export. High-value markets.
Don't pick countries. Pick demand. Which markets have the highest consumption for your product category? Where are your certifications already valid? Where is the application of your product growing fastest? Follow the demand curve. Not the map.
Priority 3 - Emerging markets. Areas of focus.
Where is infrastructure spend climbing? Which industries are adopting your product application for the first time?
Where are competitors thin on the ground? Pick 2-3 markets by opportunity size and application fit. Not by geography.
Your pricing advantage works where demand is rising and supply hasn't caught up.
Priority 1 funds Priority 2… Priority 2 builds credibility for Priority 3….
Yes, you read it right.
TAM is for annual reports. SOM is for quarterly reviews. PAM is for the next plant.
Priority 1, 2, 3? That's your Monday morning agenda.
